Student Residence Permit in Turkey

The regulations for the academic residence permit are outlined in articles 38 to 41 of Law 6458, which is focused on protecting foreign nationals and international protection. The International Student Protection Act also includes a definition of the academic residence permit, outlined in paragraphs 35 to 39.

People for whom an academic residence permit is issued

Foreign nationals who attend middle school or high school in Turkey and do not possess a family residence permit are obligated to apply for a residence permit. However, those under the age of 18 who have a family residence permit can remain in Turkey with the permit alone.

Individuals who have obtained a postgraduate, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in medicine or dentistry from a Turkish higher education institution may also be qualified for a residence permit.

The student residence permit covers only the spouse and children under the age of 18, while other family members must obtain their own residence permit and are not legally entitled to it.

Duration of student residence permit

Foreign students who plan to study in Turkey for less than a year are permitted to stay only for the duration of their study. However, those who come for educational purposes through government organizations or institutions can remain in the country for the entire duration of their studies. In case a natural or legal person provides assurance for primary or secondary school students, and a consent letter from their parents is obtained, they can acquire a residence permit valid for one year.

Conditions for obtaining an student residence permit

In order to study in Turkey, the first step is to enroll in a Turkish educational institution or university. Once you have been accepted and obtained the necessary registration documents, you can then apply for a student visa. If you are located in Iran, you can submit your admission documents to the Turkish Embassy in Iran to apply for a visa. Having a student visa is highly beneficial, as it entitles students to government support and health insurance. Under the rules and regulations of social security and public health insurance, students are required to apply for SGK public insurance within three months of their registration start date. During this period, having private health insurance is not mandatory. However, if students do not apply for public insurance within the initial three months, they are required to purchase private health insurance in Turkey.

Students who are enrolled in official associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs in Turkey are allowed to work with a valid work permit. However, students who are enrolled in an associate or bachelor’s program are only eligible to apply for a work permit starting from their second year of studies. In addition, they are required to submit their work plans to the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.

Rejection of student residence permit

• If the individual does not match the conditions, he or she will lose eligibility for a student residence permit.
• If it is discovered that a person is unable to complete his schooling.
• If it is discovered that the guy is abusing his study leave.
• If the student has been expelled from Turkey and has been handed a non-entry card,
• If a residence permit is not given, the existing residents’ stay will not be terminated or extended.
